People need Vision rather than legalism

Prov 29:18 (NKJ)
Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraing; but happy is he who keeps the law.

Over the years there have been so many inspiring messages given on the subject of vision. And yet as a leader I feel challeneged once again that people really do need vision if they are to remain engaged and motivated. Without an inspiring revelation of a preferred future people begin to lose motivation. Then out of frustration a leader may be tempted to revert to more legalistic methods of motivating people to commitment and giving based on guilt, manipulation and rules.

I remember my early days of ministry under the leadership of a senior leader who was known for his wisdom. Under this man's leadership the church grew from a small group to almost 1000 people. Eventually we outgrew our church property and needed to build a new facility to cater for the increase. And yet I can never remember him having to push the congregation or drive them hard to raise the finances rquired to build a new church building. All he did was cast an inspiring vision based upon a revelation from God's word and the people believed it and rose to the occasion happily. Though the building project was extensive and the finances needed were significant, I can never remember the church going through a financial crisis. God always provided through an excited and engaged congregation who loved to sacrifice for a greater cause.

People need vision. WIthout it they lack challenge and motivation and can easily give their time and resources to temporary things that contribute little to more worthwhile and enduring purposes. As leaders we cannot underestimate the importance of receiving ongoing and fresh revelation from God for His people. Otherwise we can easily revert to manipulative and legalistic methods of gaining the commitment and resources we need to accomplish the goals of the church. People need vision rather than legalism, and they really will be happier as a consequence!

Blessings,
